Cloud Migration Project Management

At a glance

Symphonic was engaged by Experteq to provide project management services to the Department of Planning and Environment (DPE) for the migration of their 2008 and 2012 servers from on-premise to the Cloud (AWS and Azure).

Story

The Department of Planning and Environment (DPE) is a government agency responsible for strategic planning, environmental management, and sustainable development. With a vast amount of critical data housed in on-premise 2008 and 2012 servers, the DPE is looking to modernise its infrastructure by migrating to the Cloud. The ambitious project aims to leverage the benefits of AWS and Azure platforms for enhanced scalability, security, and efficiency.

Challenges

The scope of the project is the migration of DPE's servers from on-premise infrastructure to the Cloud, utilising both AWS and Azure services. The servers to be migrated are currently running on Windows Server 2008 and 2012, and the goal is to ensure a seamless transition with minimal downtime and data integrity maintained throughout the migration process. The challenges in achieving this are to ensure compatibility of legacy systems, smooth data transfer without compromising integrity and security, minimising downtime, and compliance with industry and government security standards.

Solutions

Conducted a thorough assessment of the existing infrastructure, applications, and data to create a detailed migration plan.

Worked closely with the DPE to determine the optimal mix of AWS and Azure services based on the specific needs and requirements of the organisation.

Developed and implemented a robust data migration strategy to ensure a secure and seamless transfer of data to the cloud.

Implemented strategies to minimise downtime during the migration, such as staggered migrations, failover mechanisms, and performance testing.

Implemented advanced security measures, including encryption, identity and access management, and regular security audits to ensure compliance with industry and government standards.

Outcomes

  • Modernised Infrastructure: The DPE's infrastructure is successfully modernised, leveraging the latest cloud technologies.
  • Enhanced Security: The new cloud environment provides enhanced security features, ensuring compliance with industry and government standards.
  • Business Continuity: Minimal downtime ensures that critical services continue uninterrupted throughout the migration process.
  • Technology Standardisation: The DPE's technology stack is standardised, providing a foundation for future scalability and upgrades.

Benefits

Symphonic's expertise in project management and cloud migration delivery services proves instrumental in the successful migration of the Department of Planning and Environment's servers to AWS and Azure. The project not only meets but exceeds client objectives, positioning the DPE for increased efficiency, scalability, and security in their operations.
